Who are we?
Hi, we are the youth section of the Leicestershire Road Club. If you are a boy or girl aged between 8 and 18 years and want to learn how to race your bike then this is the club for you. We are a Go-Ride club and recently re-qualified our Clubmark status that Sport England use to determine well run clubs across all sports.
Tom Haines:Level 2 Coach and specialist in Track, Road & Time Trial, and Cyclo-cross. “Hi, my name is Tom and I am one of the coaches at the Leicestershire Road Club. I have been riding and racing one bike or another for over 20 years. I started coaching about 3 years ago and really enjoy our young riders loving the sport like I do. I want our young riders to ride and race at 10 years old and still be riding and racing years later. If they do that, then I have been successful. My role is to give our riders the confidence and skill to really express themselves on a bike whether they are racing or not.” email@example.com
Steve 'Stevo' Reed:British Cycling Level 2. "Hi, my name is Steve and I’m another of the coaches at Leicestershire road club. I have been riding bikes for around 10 years, for transport, for fun and for competition. I got into coaching a short while ago as I wanted to help young riders experience all that I have experienced through this amazing sport. As long as our youth riders are enjoying their riding and have a smile on their face I’m happy"
Andy Riley:British Cycling Level 2.
Ian Parker:“Hello, my name is Ian “Nosey” Parker and I am very pleased to be the Club Welfare Officer. I have been cycling for more than 20 years enjoying road, mtb and cyclo-cross racing and also completing some pretty testing sportives. I still keep fit with running, sportives and just riding my bike when I can. I have 2 children, Katie who is in the youngest in the Youth section, so you will see me at the Go-Ride sessions, so come over and say Hi. I am a Police Officer with 24 years of service and so I am used to dealing with all sorts of situations. I am here to try and help, so if you have any concerns or ideas to to improve the welfare of our club members drop me a line or pop over for a chat.” firstname.lastname@example.org
What do we do?
It is our aim to make you the best bike racer that you can be and get as much enjoyment out of riding your bike with friends. We provide everything that the young racer needs from learning the fundamental bike skills at our Go-Ride Club sessions to honing those skills at our circuit racing sessions at Prestwold or our cyclo-cross sessions during the winter. The coaches are British Cycling level 2 qualified with specialisms in Track, Cyclo-Cross, Time trial and Road and are all CRB checked with First Aid qualifications. We want you to achieve all your cycling dreams within the club, to provide the coaching you need to flourish starting from the age of 8.
When do we do it?
There are sessions all year round, designed to facilitate you as a rider to develop from novice all the way up to National Champion!
These are our entry level sessions and are great for any young bike rider who wants to learn more. They are aimed at our 8 -12 year olds and the aim is to get the basic fundamentals of bike riding learnt and established whilst having a load of fun. They are run on alternate Thursdays through the summer and once each month through the winter, at Beaumont Leys Speedway Centre from 6:30 till 8:30pm. A mountain bike is suitable for these sessions. From these sessions riders move on to our more progressive sessions below.
Wednesday Prestwold Circuit Racing sessions:
These sessions start as soon as you get a road bike. Every Wednesday evening (6:30-8:30pm) throughout the summer months, the LRC coaches assist in the running of road specific training for youth riders on a closed traffic-free circuit at Prestwold. These sessions teach the young riders how to ride a drop handled bar bike, ride in a bunch, sprint and chase. We introduce team tactics and team work at these sessions and for the older riders we start building their engines with some hard work.
Mallory Park racing:
Every Tuesday for all ages through the summer our youth riders put their learning into practice with proper bike racing at Mallory Park. A relaxed introduction to racing, the Leicestershire Road Club take great pride in fielding as many racers as possible with the emphasis on fun and learning to race. Racing starts at 6:30pm.
Mallory Park training:
These are an open session every Thursday during the winter at Mallory Park. We use these sessions to get our older youth riders doing some endurance work through the winter. Around 13 years old the coaching emphasis shifts slightly towards engine building and these sessions get the young riders working. Bring your lights!
Every Tuesday night at Beaumont Leys from September to January. These sessions are aimed at our under 12s, 14s and 16s. They are a mix of learning cyclo-cross skils and very hard efforts. With our qualified cyclo-cross coach, learn how to mount, dismount, carry and corner your cyclo-cross bike at speed!
The LRC youth section is a member of the East Midlands track cluster group. This allows our riders access to coached sessions at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester to learn the basics of track riding and racing. With the a track coach and the completion of Derby velodrome in 2015, the LRC is at the forefront of youth track coaching in the East Midlands.
Winter roller riding:
(12 years and up), Tuesday nights January to March, at our clubhouse in Leicester. All our U 16 and U 14 riders can ride rollers – all one handed – most no handed and some no handed, one legged! It’s not to equip them for the circus but to provide leg speed and exceptional bike handling that will be needed when they race on the road, track or through the mud.
Our riders race all year round. There is no limit to what you want to achieve and what you can achieve. In the summer months there is road circuit racing at Mallory Park, Darley Moor, Fulbeck, Rockingham, Milton Keynes and more. There are track leagues at Newcastle-under-Lyme and Forest Town and mountain bike racing at the Friday Night summer series. In the winter, cyclo-cross racing is at Notts & Derby league, Lincolnshire league and the Midlands league.
So, there is plenty to do. If you are aged 8 to 18 and want to be the best bike rider you can be then the LRC can provide the coaching and the facilities to do it. If you just want to ride your bike we can do that too!
